SumaiL Loses Court Case To Evil Geniuses

Popular esports journalist Richard Lewis made a post on Substack reporting that SumaiL has lost the trial to Evil Geniuses in the ongoing lawsuit. The Mid player accused the organization for a breach of contract and fraud.

In 2016, Evil Geniuses offered SumaiL 400 thousand shares of the company to keep him in the roster. This was a year after SumaiL lifted the Aegis at The International 5

In 2019, the company Peak6 Strategic Capital purchased Evil Geniuses. Due to this transaction, SumaiL’s shares were converted into 265,338 units of common stock and 106,667 units of restricted common stock. In the same year, SumaiL signed a new annual contract with Evil Geniuses with a promised salary of $20,000 per month.

However, after a 5-6th place finish at The International 9, Evil Geniuses changed the contract, releasing SumaiL from obligations to the team and reducing his monthly salary to $2,000 USD per month.

SumaiL, being a naive 20 year old at the time, agreed to the amendments without too much understanding of the situation; he just wanted to play on the professional scene in another team.

As it turned out, SumaiL was not allowed to pursue options in other teams because he owned part of Evil Geniuses shares, causing a conflict of interest if he were to play in another team. This amendment, and by extension his contract with EG, could be terminated for a one time fee of $125,000.

Both parties decided to come to an agreement, where Evil Geniuses would buy SumaiL’s shares for $1,000,000, with $300,000 to be paid immediately and the $700,000 paid after SumaiL retires from Dota 2. However, SumaiL is still 24 years old and has the ability to compete for many more years to come; retirement is still long ways away.

In summary, SumaiL is suing Evil Geniuses because the organization did not provide “complete and accurate information” for him in this purchase agreement. It was concluded that SumaiL never received any value whatsoever for his shares and/or units despite his long-term commitment and dedication to EG and its esports organization. Put simply, Evil Geniuses took advantage of a young, naive, and vulnerable SumaiL by presenting unconscionable and ambiguous terms in numerous proposed arcane agreements to SumaiL in multiple attempts to strong-arm SumaiL out of the well-earned benefits of his labors and talent.”

However, it was recently revealed that Evil Geniuses and Peak6 were favored in the court case, and SumaiL was left without compensation for damages.
